The Southern Aeromedical Institute (SAMI) was founded in 1999 and has been functional in a variety of capacities including aerospace research, training protocol development and clinical medicine. The facility comprises of two buildings joined by a fixed atrium for a total of 11,000 square feet dedicated to aerospace related projects. Within, lies a state of the art, computer guided environmental physiology unit (EPU- hypobaric/hyperbaric chamber) which conducts a variety of projects including human occupancy in high altitude vehicles and equipment testing. The EPU can ascend to 100,000 foot of altitude and also has explosive decompression capability for equipment testing. A 2000 square feet auditorium comfortably holds 50-75 people for training sessions and symposiums. The facility lies in close proximity to the Melbourne International Airport and the Florida Institute of Technology in Melbourne, Florida.
